Menthon-Saint-Bernard: Amazing Castle Near Annecy
Towering over Lake Annecy from its rocky perch, Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard has watched over the region for nearly a thousand years. This stronghold was built in the 10th century to control vital trade routes through the Alps.
Over time, it transformed from a strategic fortress into an elegant residence, passing down through the same noble family for 23 generations – a rarity in France’s long history of war and revolution.
A Defensive Stronghold Turned Stately Home

The castle’s 200-meter-high cliffside location provided a natural defense against invaders. Its thick stone walls and strategic positioning made it a reliable military outpost.
By the late Middle Ages, the fortress evolved into a more refined noble residence, and the medieval fortifications were blended with elements of Renaissance architecture. The interiors reflect this with grand halls, painted ceilings, and large fireplaces replacing cold stone chambers.

Home of the Patron Saint of Skiers
One of the castle’s most famous figures is St. Bernard of Menthon, born there in the 10th century. He rejected his family’s plans for an arranged marriage, choosing instead to devote his life to aiding Alpine travelers.

He went on to establish hospices in the high mountain passes to ensure safe passage for merchants and pilgrims. The legendary St. Bernard dogs, trained to rescue lost travelers in the snowy Alps, are named in his honor.
A Library Fit for a Scholar

Beyond the grand façade, the castle holds a treasure trove of history. Among its over 100 rooms, one of the most remarkable is the library, which houses 12,000 ancient books including some dating back to the Middle Ages.
These manuscripts and volumes chronicle centuries of European knowledge, philosophy, and law. This is one of the most fascinating private collections in the region.
Hidden Passages, Amazing Views
Like most great fortress, Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard has its share of mysteries. Secret passages built into its stone walls allowed inhabitants to escape during times of siege. Some of these tunnels still exist today.
The castle’s elevated position offers one of the best panoramic views in the French Alps. From its terraces, visitors can gaze out over Lake Annecy, the Roc de Chère National Nature Reserve, and the surrounding villages.
The landscape has changed little since the days when knights patrolled its ramparts.
Visiting This Living Monument

Unlike many medieval castles that have become museum pieces, Menthon-Saint-Bernard is still a lived-in home. The current family continues to maintain its legacy, offering guided tours that bring its history to life.
From spring through fall, visitors can explore its grand halls, admire its historic art collection, and even witness medieval reenactments.
