Paris in May: How Busy Is It, and Which Dates Should You Avoid?
May has a reputation as one of the best months for Paris. It’s also packed with holidays, in France and next door, that most visitors never hear about.
We pulled ten years of weather records, official tourism figures and the 2027 holiday calendars to answer what matters before you book: how busy the city gets, what it costs, what the weather does, and which dates to dodge.
Is May a good time to visit Paris?
For the weather, yes: highs climb from the mid 60s to the low 70s °F, with around eleven hours of sunshine a day. It isn’t a quiet month, though, and in May the calendar matters more than usual.
Settle your dates before you book anything else.
How crowded is Paris in May?
May is close to peak season. The Paris region logs about 10.3 million tourist nights in an average May, 97% of its July peak, and only June, July and October are busier (Eurostat, 2023–25).
Hotels fill up too: about 81% of rooms in the city are booked in an average May, close to the June peak of 86% (INSEE, 2023–25).
Plan on booking your room and the big-ticket sights well ahead rather than leaving it to the last minute.
Will hotels be cheaper?
Across France, accommodation prices in May run about 21% below their August peak, then climb through June and July (Eurostat, 2023–25). With Paris hotels already this full, though, don’t count on deals: book early.
What’s the weather like?
Highs rise through the month, from about 64°F in the first week to 71°F in the last. Expect around three rainy days a week and roughly eleven hours of sunshine a day. Days above 77°F are rare until the final week.
Pack layers and a light rain jacket rather than summer clothes, especially for the first half of the month.
Which dates should you avoid?
May’s holidays bunch up on a few stretches, across France and its neighbors (service-public.fr, OpenHolidays):
- May 1–9: the busiest stretch. Labour Day (May 1) and Victory Day (May 8) fall on Saturdays, and Ascension on Thursday May 6, with French schools also closed on Friday the 7th. Part of France is on spring break until May 3, the Netherlands until May 2, and French-speaking Belgium until May 9.
- May 15–17: the Whit Monday long weekend in France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
- May 18–30: Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, Germany’s two big southern states, are on Pentecost break, and Corpus Christi on Thursday May 27 gives six German states another long weekend.
If your trip overlaps one of these stretches, book your room as early as you can.
Early or late May?
The calmest window is May 10–14, Monday to Friday between the two big holiday weekends, when only Hamburg’s schools are off. Later in the month is warmer and a little sunnier, at the cost of the German Pentecost holidays.
Go mid-month if crowds matter most, late in the month if you want the warmest days.
The verdict
May is a lovely month for Paris, just not a quiet one: crowds and hotel bookings sit close to their summer highs, and prices are already on the way up.
The calendar is the real story. Skip the first nine days of the month, when holiday weekends stack up across France and its neighbors, and the Whit Monday weekend.
If you can, aim for May 10–14, or the last week of May if you’d trade a few more visitors for warmer days.

A few recommended stays
Hôtel Caron le Marais (3★), Le Marais
An 18-room hotel a minute from Place des Vosges and three from Saint-Paul metro, on a side street that stays quiet at night. Guests praise the welcoming staff and spotless rooms. Rooms are tiny, so pack light, and skip the hotel breakfast: the cafés around the corner are better value.
Hôtel de Fleurie (3★), Saint-Germain-des-Prés
An 1890 building on a quiet street by Odéon, four minutes from the Luxembourg Gardens, with the Louvre, Orsay and Notre-Dame all within walking distance. The staff are the standout in guest reviews, and the lounge serves tea and cake in the afternoon. Rooms are cozy and spotless but small, typical for the neighborhood.
